ST. LOUIS; June 26, 2019— Dr. Brown’s® Medical today announced that its Dr. Brown’s® Specialty Feeding System has been selected as the Silver Winner in the Over-the-Counter and Self-Care Products category of the 21st Annual Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) competition. The 2019 winning products were announced at the MDEA Ceremony held Tuesday, June 11, in conjunction with Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York.
The Dr. Brown’s® Specialty Feeding System is an oral feeding solution that allows infants with complex feeding challenges – from cleft lips and palates to ankyloglossia to oro-neuromotor dysfunctions – to more easily feed on their own. This system includes the addition of the Dr. Brown’s® Infant Paced Feeding Valve, which, when inserted into any Dr. Brown’s® standard silicone bottle nipple, creates a “compression” nipple. When used with the Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow® bottle system, it assists the infant in self-regulation during oral feedings by offering consistent and reliable nipple flow rates.
The MDEAs are the medical technology industry’s premier design competition committed to searching for the world’s highest caliber finished medical devices, products, systems, or packaging available on the market. The awards program celebrates the achievements of the medical device manufacturers, their suppliers, and the many people behind the scenes—engineers, scientists, designers, and clinicians—who are responsible for the cutting-edge products that are saving lives; improving patient healthcare; and transforming medtech—one innovation at a time.
“Dr. Brown’s Medical vision is to be the global leader in infant and children’s evidence-based feeding solutions by providing products, support and education to caregivers” said Sandra Aubuchon, President of Dr. Brown’s Medical. “MDEA’s recognition excites us as we continue to bring more awareness to simple, innovative feeding solutions that aid in better outcomes for babies and provides satisfaction to their families.”
The 2019 MDEA juror panel selected exceptional finalists in nine medical technology product categories. Products were judged based on design and engineering innovation, function and user-related innovation, patient benefits, business benefits, and overall benefit to the healthcare system. Unlike other design competitions that are merely styling contests, the MDEA jury is comprised of a balance of practicing doctors, nurses, and technicians alongside industrial designers, engineers, manufacturers, and human factors experts.
