Overview

This one-hour webinar will provide information on how to select the appropriate nipple flow rate for infants in the NICU, with a focus on long-term outcomes. This webinar explains why choosing a slow flow nipple is beneficial from a neurodevelopmental perspective and provides you with a new way to engage in education with staff and the families you treat regarding “the why.” The webinar will incorporate evidence-based foundational knowledge with higher-level talking points to encourage unit-wide consensus on the safest ways to support infants as they learn the complex task of eating by mouth. Target audience includes OT, SLP, PT, RN, MD and other healthcare professionals involved in infant feeding.

Learning Outcomes

After attending this webinar, the learner will be able to:

  1. Investigate at least two of the normal suck-swallow-breathe neurodevelopmental milestones from fetus to newborn.
  2. Relate at least one way slow flow nipples help bridge the gap between how healthy infants learn to eat by mouth when compared to how NICU infants learn.
  3. Differentiate at least one criterion that an infant should achieve before progressing to a different flowing nipple.

Timed Agenda
  • 1:00 – 1:05 Introduction
