Overview

This one-hour webinar will provide practical tips for the successful modification of expressed human milk and formula for the successful management of pediatric dysphagia. The presenter will use real life examples of thickening challenges to illustrate clinically useful practices that can be implemented across settings. Target audience includes OT, SLP, PT, RN, MD and other healthcare professionals involved in infant feeding.

Learning Outcomes

After attending this webinar, the learner will be able to:

1. Investigate at least two problem-solving steps a feeder should follow if an infant is struggling to consume thickened liquids from a bottle.
2. Differentiate three products that can be used to safely thicken infant liquids.
3. Relate at least one benefit of using thickened liquids for pediatric populations with dysphagia.

Timed Agenda

• 1:00 – 1:10pm Review common thickening products and evidence to support thickening practices in pediatric populations with dysphagia.
• 1:10 to 1:25 Case 1- Problem-solving thickening for expressed human milk
• 1:25 to 1:40 Case 2- Determining the best bottle/nipple/cup combinations for drinking thickened liquids.
• 1:40 to 1:55 Case 3- Matching bedside thickened liquids to barium test consistencies.
• 1:55 to 2:00 Question/Discussion
