Overview
This webinar introduces the Prefeeding Pathways™ framework, a structured, goal-directed approach to prefeeding habilitation in the NICU. Designed for neonatal professionals, the session explores how early sensory and motor experiences can be used intentionally to support feeding readiness in preterm and medically complex infants. This learning opportunity presents a cohesive framework built around three goals: establishing positive sensory-motor associations, building functional feeding skills through graded experiences, and identifying performance-based challenges. Participants will learn how these goals align to create a continuum of prefeeding habilitation. The webinar also highlights interdisciplinary collaboration, presenting prefeeding as a shared infant experience supported through different clinical lenses. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how to approach prefeeding with intention, assess readiness through therapeutic interactions, and integrate these practices into everyday care.
Learning Objectives
After attending the webinar, the learner will be able to:
- Distinguish between the 3 three overarching goals of prefeeding habilitation and how they guide clinical decision-making within the Prefeeding Pathways™ framework.
- Determine at least 3 ways that simulated-feeding interventions inform clinical assessment of feeding readiness.
- Identify at least 2 supportive prefeeding techniques within each pathway that NICU nurses, therapists, and caregivers can implement to promote feeding readiness.
